CHAPTER 11

Eve was as nervous as she’d been when she’d faced a whole vampire nest that had collected out in a rural area of the county years ago. But that’s exactly how she felt about her upcoming meeting with Melanie.

She’d pulled up beside a shelter house in a park in the quaint little town of Cottonwood Springs, where Melanie had told Eve she’d meet her. Eve had thought it sounded like as good of a place as any, but now that she was at the park, she couldn’t help but smile. The bright openness of the park with children playing in the distance seemed like an excellent place to attempt to commune with the dead.

When she climbed out of her truck, Eve saw there was a bicycle leaned up against the outside of the old stone and concrete shelter house. A pitched roof was perched on top, making it the perfect place for families to have birthday parties, or even for parkgoers to get a bit of shade and cool off.

Slowly and steadily, willing her feet to move, she approached the building. Drawing closer, she saw there were no doors, just an open area on either side of the building and picnic tables inside. A woman who looked to be about Miranda’s age was sitting at one of them. Her long dark blonde hair was swept back in a neat ponytail.

“Eve Riley?” the woman asked as she stood up.

“That’s me,” Eve said with a smile. “And you must be Melanie.”

“I am,” she said as they shook hands. “Please, come and sit.” Eve went to the opposite side of the picnic table and took a seat across from her. “Have you ever had a reading with a psychic medium before?” Melanie asked.

“No, I can’t say that I have,” Eve admitted. “Is that bad?”

“Not at all,” Melanie said as she shook her head. “I just wanted to make sure you don’t have any expectations in mind before we get started.”

“Not really,” Eve admitted. She knew better than to expect anything. Her line of work had drilled that into her many times.

“Let me start by explaining how I view what I do,” Melanie said. “I connect with lost loved ones on the other side. They communicate their messages through me with symbols and things that mean something to me. Sometimes, however, they show me something I don’t have a meaning for. Most often that is something that will have a meaning for you.

“Don’t overthink it or try to make everything fit today. Far too often people will find days later that something I brought up makes sense. So just try to keep an open mind as we go along. Okay?” Melanie’s eyes were bright and her smile comforting, making it easier for Eve to relax.

“I can do that,” Eve said with a nod.

“Perfect,” Melanie said. “Please give me a minute to sense what’s around you and start a line of communication.” She closed her eyes and looked as if she were deeply concentrating. Eve sat across from her and watched the expression on her face.
